A Man of Honor
By Pastor Pablo
“Men of Honor” is the title of a movie from the year 2000 directed by George Tilman with Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. This movie is based on a real story of a black man who wanted to get into the Navy, but he had to go through many oppositions; but he persisted and at the end he reached his goal to be a diver in the US Navy. Today I want to mention this time as a real man of honor is mentioned during Christmas time; but the rest of the year, he is forgotten. His name is mentioned by the four gospels of the New Testament, and the information we have about his life is limited, but among the men of honor throughout history, this man must be included. God chose this man because God knew his heart and that he was a man of honor. His name was Joseph, the name of his father was Jacob. Joseph was a descendant from King David, from the tribe of Judah. When Joseph grew up, he learned the trade of carpentry. He had his carpentry shop in Nazareth, a small town in the region of Palestine. I imagine Joseph working many hours a day making tables, chairs, cabinets, or building houses.
During Joseph’s time there was not a carpenter union to protect his labor, and carpentry was not a trade of honor, but Joseph was a man of honor. Joseph met a young lady named Mary who was also from the same tribe. According to the synoptic Gospels, Joseph and Mary were engaged to be married. During those times in that culture, weddings were pre-arranged by the parents. Children did not select their husband or wives. After the engagement, the groom and the bride had a legal promise, but they were not allowed to live together. Everything was ready for that great celebration. The church was ready, the minister and the guests also were just waiting the that important day. Maybe some relatives and friends had selected their presents to bring to Joseph and Mary the day of their wedding.
One day, Joseph was working in his carpentry shop when he learned that his girlfriend Mary was pregnant without sleeping with him. During those times when a virgin got pregnant without being married she was sentenced to be stoned until she dies. The first person who had the right to throw the first stone was the husband or fiancé. In this case, Joseph was the person with the right to throw the first stone to kill Mary to restore honor of his name.
